About the maps

What are these maps?

They are detailed, artist-made maps of places across the UK, designed for print. Each one combines careful research with a distinctive graphic style, offering a new way to see familiar landscapes.

What is This Place Then?

This Place Then is a series that places contemporary neighbourhoods alongside their historic counterparts from around 100 years ago. By aligning past and present, the maps reveal how streets, buildings, and landscapes have changed — and what traces remain.

Which places are available?

Current editions focus on London, including Lower Clapton, Stoke Newington, Dalston, Shoreditch, and Homerton, with more locations in development. We have a set of Bristol maps too, that we made to support Urban Good CIC.

Are the maps accurate?

Yes — they are based on detailed geographic and historic data. That said, they are not intended as navigation tools; they are interpretive works designed for exploration, reflection, and display.

Who makes the maps?

The maps are created by Charlie Peel, a London-based map maker, and published through Map Editions, an independent imprint.

Ordering & delivery

How long will my order take to arrive?

Orders are usually processed within a few working days. UK delivery typically takes 2–5 working days after dispatch. International delivery can be arranged on request. Please email the shop.

How are the maps packaged?

Maps are carefully wrapped to protect them in transit — typically rolled in sturdy tubes or flat-packed depending on size and format.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — but please email the shop before placing an order and we can arrange it for you. It is not automated on the site yet.

Will I receive tracking information?

Where possible, tracking details will be provided once your order has been dispatched.

Prints & materials

What kind of paper do you use?

We use high-quality, archival-grade papers chosen to suit each edition — balancing durability, colour, and texture. This Place Then maps are printed on Innova Décor smooth Art 210gsm.

Are the maps limited editions?

All editions are produced in small batches or limited runs. Details will be included on each product listing where relevant. There will usually be just one or two Artist Proofs outside the edition number.

Are the prints signed or numbered?

All editions are signed and numbered. This will be clearly stated on the individual product page.

Do the colours match what I see on screen?

We aim for accurate representation, but colours may vary slightly depending on your screen and lighting conditions. We work with the best printers and materials as we take print quality and colour reproduction seriously!

Framing & display

Do you offer framing?

Some maps are available framed, or framing options may be introduced over time. Details will be listed on the product page where available.

What size are the maps?

Sizes vary by edition. Dimensions are listed clearly on each product page to help you plan framing and display.

Returns & issues

Can I return a map?

If you’re not happy with your order, please get in touch within 14 days of receiving it. Returns are accepted in original condition. It is really important not to unroll your map with dirty hands or on an unclean surface. Be careful not to crease or damage the edges when replacing the map in its original packaging.

What if my map arrives damaged?

If your order arrives damaged, contact us with photos and we’ll arrange a replacement or refund.

About the practice

What is Map Editions?

Map Editions is an independent imprint producing small-batch maps that combine rigorous research with playful, exploratory graphic design.

Why make maps like this?

These maps are made to slow people down and encourage closer looking — to notice patterns, histories, and relationships that are often hidden in everyday landscapes. I often get challenged that haven’t all the maps been made already?! So I am always looking to invent new ways of showing spatial information.
