Edition of 33 | A2 size (594 × 420mm)

Historic cartography, layered with the colours of now.

A striking reimagining of a historic map of Bristol and its wider region, including the Severn coast. This cyanotype-style print draws out the enduring presence of the city’s waterways, woodlands, and rail lines: highlighting what has changed, what remains, and maybe what’s been lost.

Modern rivers, reservoirs, forests and train lines invite quiet reflection on the city’s evolving relationship with nature and movement.

This Place Then is an ongoing map series by Charlie Peel, published by Map Editions. Each piece overlays contemporary data — from buildings and rail lines to rivers, parks and urban footprints — onto historic Ordnance Survey maps of varying dates and scales. The result is a layered, visually striking cartographic artwork: a map of what is now, grounded in what once was.

Every edition is created through a process of digital georeferencing, aligning past and present with precision. Contemporary layers are added to the old maps with care — using either bold contrasts or soft blends, depending on the edition — to create beautiful and sometimes surprising views of familiar places. The selections of colours and overlays are chosen for both clarity and aesthetic impact, highlighting the ways landscapes, cities and memories evolve.

Printed in rich cyan tones using museum-quality, acid-free paper, this edition of 33 is signed, stamped and numbered. Made to last over 100 years.
